Who are the best spinners in IPL history?
1. Amit Mishra
The best spinner in IPL history is Amit Mishra, who has taken 160 wickets in 150 matches – behind only Lasith Malinga in the all-time wickets table.
The veteran is still playing – he is part of the Delhi Capitals squad for 2021 – but featured in just three games in 2020 and is likely to play another small role this year.
2. Piyush Chawla
The second-best spinner of all time in the IPL is Piyush Chawla, who has claimed 156 wickets in 164 matches in the competition.
Like Mishra, Chawla is still playing – he will line up for Mumbai in 2021 – but may have to settle for a bit-part role after playing just seven matches for Chennai in 2020.
3. Harbhajan Singh
The third best spinner in the history of the IPL is India legend Harbhajan Singh, who ended his career with 150 wickets.
He played most of his career for Mumbai, captaining them in four seasons, before moving to Chennai for two seasons at the end of his career.
4. Ravichandran Ashwin
Next on the list is Ravichandran Ashwin, who has taken 138 wickets in 154 matches in the competition.
That haul ranks him fourth all time among spinners and sixth overall.
5. Sunil Narine
Sunil Narine comes in behind Ashwin with 127 wickets in his 120 matches.
The West Indies international was named MVP in 2012 as his 24 wickets helped the Kolkata Knight Riders to their first title.
Who are the best spinners currently playing in the IPL?
The best spinner currently playing in the IPL is Afghanistan international Rashid Khan.
The leggy is rated as the best T20 bowler in the world by the ICC, and has lit up the IPL in each of his four seasons to date.
Khan has taken 75 wickets in just 62 IPL matches, including 20 wickets in the 2020 edition for Sunrisers Hyderabad, who he will play for again in 2021.
Also among the best current spinners in the IPL is Yuzvendra Chahal, who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The India international finished the 2020 tournament with 21 wickets – the most for a spinner, and has claimed 121 victims in 99 career matches in the IPL. He is fast closing on Narine for fifth best spinner ever in IPL history.
His India teammate, Ravichandran Ashwin – fourth all time in wickets among spinners – is another who ranks among the best spinners in the IPL at the moment. He will play his second season for the Delhi Capitals in 2021.
One player who has recently entered the conversation about best IPL spinners is Varun Chakravarthy of the Kolkata Knight Riders, who took 17 wickets in 2020.
This was the third best tally by a spinner in the tournament, and Chakravarthy will be hoping to continue that form into 2021.
Another new addition to this list is Rahul Chahar, who followed up a stellar debut season in 2019, in which he took 13 wickets, with a 15-wicket campaign last year.
Chahar, who has played one T20I for India, was retained by the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, for 2021.
